Why coaching is important in PR and the marketing, media and creative industries

A diverse group of five people working together in an office with large windows, some using laptops, one presenting ideas on a whiteboard with sticky notes, and cardboard boxes on the floor.

I am a firm believer that coaching is one of the most powerful yet underused tools for professional development across the PR, marketing, media and creative industries. Some senior leaders may receive executive or leadership coaching, but the majority don’t. What’s more, developmental coaching is rarely given to the people who can benefit from it the most.

More times than I can count, I have sat across from talented people and I've had the same frustration — if only you knew how good you could be!

These are industries that give you everything and they ask a great deal in return. They shape you in ways that are hard to explain to anyone who hasn't done it. PR made me who I am.

But when professional development sits almost entirely on training and line management, it’s only half the picture. Resilience, tenacity, creativity and bravery aren’t developed in a workshop or a performance review.

We hire people for their thinking and potential, then we put them under enormous pressure and hope the best of them survives. Coaching works from the inside out so they can build their own toolkit and not only survive, but unlock what they - and the agency - are actually capable of.
